The glaciers of Puncak Jaya in Papua are projected to disappear completely within the next two years. A century ago, permanent ice and snow blanketed all four major peaks across the 300-kilometer Sudirman Range.
According to data from The Business Standard, the total glacier coverage has seen a drastic decline, shrinking from approximately 1,900 hectares (4,700 acres) in the 19th century to roughly 16 hectares (40 acres) in the present day.
